How to check your own website — no technical skills needed

You do not need to be technical to check your website. With half an hour and a phone you can test the essentials yourself: speed, the mobile experience, and whether Google understands what the site is about. Here is the method — plus an automated check that covers the rest.

Speed: count the seconds

Open your site on your phone, ideally on mobile data instead of wifi. Count the seconds until you can read the content. Under three seconds is good. Noticeably longer? Then visitors wait for the same thing — Google’s own data shows more than half abandon a mobile page that takes over three seconds.

Test more than the front page: a service page, the contact page, and the checkout if you run a shop.

Mobile: use the site like a customer

Still on the phone: try to do what a customer would do. Find the price. Find the phone number. Send the contact form. Add a product to the cart. Note everything that needs pinching, zooming or hunting — that is the friction your customers meet every day.

  • Do you understand the offer within five seconds?
  • Can you find a price or price indication?
  • Can you call with one tap?
  • Does the contact form work?Send a test — did it reach your inbox?
  • Is the text readable without zooming?
  • Can you get through checkout without stops? For webshops
The mobile test — do each task as if you were a customer.

The SEO basics: three simple searches

Search for your business name on Google. Does your site come up top, with a sensible title and description? Then search "site:yourdomain.no" — the list shows which pages Google knows. If important pages are missing, or strange ones appear, that is worth investigating.

Finally: search the way a customer would — "your service + your town". You do not need top ranking on everything, but if you are absent from the searches that matter, the site is not working for you.

Let an automated check take the rest

The self-test above catches what you can see. It does not catch the technical layer underneath: measured speed against Google’s thresholds, the security setup, the email configuration on the domain, or technical faults that keep Google from reading the site.

That part our free website check covers in under a minute — no email address, no obligations. If the results show many weak points, 10 signs your business needs a new website helps you decide between renovation and a rebuild.
